The number of Myanmar refugees seeking shelter in India’s Mizoram State has approached nearly 40,000 following the recent influx of over 1,000 displaced persons into Champhai district, according to a report by the Times of India.
Displaced individuals from Falam Township in Chin State have been steadily crossing into Champhai district since May 1. Official government records indicate that there are 29,723 registered Myanmar refugees across Mizoram, with Champhai district hosting the largest concentration at 12,083 individuals.
The initial wave of displacement began after the military junta launched an airstrike on Khawpuichhip Village in Falam Township on May 1. The attack killed seven civilians, including six children—one of whom was a five-month-old infant—prompting over 150 people to flee across the India-Myanmar border into Zokhawthar Village.
A second wave of 822 refugees crossed the border last Tuesday and Wednesday. This displacement followed the military junta regaining control of Falam town and Surbung Airport on April 25—areas that had been held by the Chin Brotherhood for nearly a year—sparking fears of a renewed westward offensive by the regime.
Kuma, a leader of a local community organization (HPO), noted that the junta administration is allegedly planning to recapture the Rihkhawdar-Khawmawi border area, which serves as a vital trade link with the Zokhawthar border trade center in Mizoram’s Champhai district.
Originally housing a population of under 3,000 according to the 2011 census, the border village of Zokhawthar is now hosting around 8,000 Myanmar refugees. This massive influx has pushed the village into a severe humanitarian crisis and left it struggling with intense overpopulation.
Mizoram Home Department officials stated that the Myanmar refugees who arrived this May are currently categorized as temporary displaced persons. Because there is a possibility they may return home in the near future, officials noted they have not yet been included in the state’s ongoing biometric data enrollment process.
