CHIANG MAI, Thailand — Min Ko Naing, a prominent leader of the 88 Generation Students and a key figure in Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement, was officially named the recipient of the prestigious 2026 Citizen of Burma Award today.
The announcement was made during the 17th annual Citizen of Burma Award ceremony, held on May 23, 2026, at Chiang Mai University in northern Thailand.
The Citizen of Burma Award was established in 2009 by the U.S.-based Citizen of Burma Organization, which began presenting the annual accolade in 2010. The award is designed to recognize and honor individuals or organizations that have demonstrated exceptional dedication to social welfare, democracy, human rights, education, and humanitarian efforts for the people of Myanmar.
A Legacy of Civil Excellence
The award has a long history of honoring notable figures and groups in Myanmar’s civic sphere. Past laureates include prominent humanitarians such as Kyaw Thu, a former actor and founder of the Free Funeral Service Society (FFSS), and Dr. Cynthia Maung, founder of the Mae Tao Clinic on the Thailand-Myanmar border. Distinguished institutional recipients include the Muslim Free Hospital on Barr Street in Yangon and the Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC).
Min Ko Naing rose to prominence as a charismatic student leader during the historic 1988 pro-democracy uprisings. His decades-long resistance against military dictatorship led to multiple extended prison sentences under successive military regimes.
International Acclaim for Human Rights
Throughout his career, Min Ko Naing’s unyielding commitment to democracy and human rights has earned him extensive international recognition, including:
- John Humphrey Freedom Award (Presented by Canada-based Rights & Democracy)
- Homo Homini Award (Presented by Czech Republic-based People in Need)
- Civil Courage Prize (Presented by the U.S.-based Train Foundation)
- Gwangju Prize for Human Rights (Awarded in 2009 by South Korea’s May 18 Foundation, recognized as one of Asia’s most prestigious human rights honors)
Organizers of the 17th Citizen of Burma Award emphasized that this year’s tribute is a formal recognition of Min Ko Naing’s lifelong sacrifices, his enduring leadership in Myanmar’s ongoing democratic struggle, and his foundational contributions to empowering future generations.
