U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that 5,000 additional U.S. troops will be deployed to Poland, coming just a week after the Pentagon initially canceled a planned deployment of 4,000 personnel to the country.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, President Trump stated that the decision was rooted in the close relationship between the United States and Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whose candidacy Trump had personally endorsed during Poland’s presidential election last year. However, the U.S. president did not clarify whether this deployment is part of an existing operational plan or constitutes an entirely new mission.

The announcement comes despite recent signals from the White House indicating plans to reduce the overall U.S. military footprint in Europe under its “America First” policy.

Earlier this month, Washington announced the withdrawal of 5,000 U.S. troops from Germany following a heated dispute between President Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the ongoing conflict with Iran. Trump had fiercely criticized Chancellor Merz after the German leader remarked that the U.S. administration had been “humiliated” by Iranian negotiators. As a result, it remains unclear whether the troops bound for Poland are those being pulled out of Germany or a separate reinforcement unit.

Furthermore, Washington has previously rebuked NATO allies for failing to join the United States in pressuring Iran over the Strait of Hormuz situation.

On Friday, Sweden will host a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, which U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to attend. Secretary Rubio is widely expected to demand that NATO allies shoulder a greater share of defense spending, in line with U.S. expectations.

Ahead of the meeting, the BBC questioned Rubio regarding unconfirmed reports that the U.S. might reduce its troop commitments to defend NATO member states in the event of an attack. Rubio responded that some of these issues would be addressed during the summit, adding that President Trump remains deeply frustrated and disappointed with the NATO allies.

Trump’s sudden announcement comes one week after the Pentagon abruptly canceled the deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland. U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth later clarified that the cancellation was merely a “temporary delay” in the scheduling of forces and emphasized that the U.S. maintains a steadfast commitment to its military presence in Poland.

Polish President Nawrocki has been a long-standing, staunch ally of President Trump and secured Trump’s endorsement prior to winning the Polish presidency.

During a BBC radio interview in January, Nawrocki asserted that Trump is the only global leader capable of deterring Vladimir Putin and bringing an end to the war in Ukraine. The Polish president maintained that despite Trump’s persistent criticisms of the NATO alliance and European leaders, the United States remains the ultimate guarantor of European security.

Nonetheless, Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Germany has drawn sharp criticism from several Republican lawmakers at home, who warn that the move sends a dangerously wrong signal to Russia.
