At least 11 people have been killed, over 140,000 homes left without power, and a historic UNESCO World Heritage cathedral caught fire following a massive overnight Russian drone and missile bombardment across Ukraine.

Ukrainian authorities stated on Monday that the strikes, which targeted several major cities including the capital, Kyiv, represent one of the most severe aerial assaults on civilian infrastructure and cultural heritage sites in recent months. A Russian kamikaze drone directly struck the roof of the landmark 11th-century Dormition Cathedral in Kyiv, triggering a massive blaze that engulfed an area of approximately 800 square meters. Before firefighters could contain the inferno, priests and rescue workers raced into the burning structure to salvage priceless, historically significant religious artifacts.

“This demonstrates to the world that Russia intends to prolong this war. It is crucial for G7 nations to deliver a decisive and effective response,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on his social media platform X. He added that the coordinated strikes resulted in the deaths of 11 civilians and emergency responders, while 53 others sustained injuries across the country.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Culture reported that a nearby national film studio was struck by a missile, resulting in a fire that completely destroyed a wardrobe department housing an archive of over 100,000 historic traditional costumes.

According to local reports, Russia deployed dozens of Shahed kamikaze drones and at least 15 high-speed guided missiles targeting Kyiv alone. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that direct hits on high-rise residential buildings left more than 20 people injured in the capital, including a pregnant woman and a young child.

Meanwhile, in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, a calculated Russian “double-tap” strike claimed the lives of five emergency rescue workers. A second drone struck the exact same location just minutes after an initial missile impact, targeting first responders who were actively working to extinguish the resulting blaze.

The devastating wave of airstrikes followed separate phone calls on Sunday between U.S. President Donald Trump and both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss peace negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
