Myanmar Envoy Warns UN: Public Deeply Concerned Over Military Regime’s Nuclear Ambitions

At the 2026 Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) conference in New York, Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, issued a stern warning to the international community regarding the military regime’s nuclear aspirations.
The Ambassador highlighted that the Myanmar people are “gravely concerned” about the increasing nuclear cooperation between the terrorist military junta and a specific nuclear-armed state. He pointed out that it is impossible to trust the regime’s claims of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, given their track record of weaponizing dual-use goods to commit war crimes.
Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun emphasized that the military junta cannot be considered a reliable partner in nuclear affairs. He noted their consistent violations of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus and UN resolutions. Furthermore, he reminded the assembly of the regime’s history of concealing chemical weapons programs, suggesting a similar lack of transparency regarding nuclear activities.
“The only absolute guarantee is the total elimination of nuclear weapons,” the Ambassador stated. He urged member states to immediately cut off the flow of arms, jet fuel, and technology to the military regime.
The Ambassador asserted that international cooperation—including nuclear-related matters—should only be extended to Myanmar once the military dictatorship is eradicated, democracy is restored, and the military is placed under civilian oversight.
While acknowledging the right to use nuclear energy peacefully, he stressed the absolute necessity of strictly following IAEA guidelines to prevent such technology from falling into the wrong hands and being misused.
