April 2, 2026 | Burma Independent Voice

A report released by Data for Myanmar reveals that 125,328 civilian homes have been destroyed by fires set by the military council and its affiliated organizations in the five years following the military coup in Myanmar.

According to the report’s statistics covering the period from May 1, 2021, to February 28, 2026, the military council troops were responsible for 97 percent of the total destruction, accounting for 121,485 homes.

Nationwide, Sagaing Region has been the worst affected, with 78,896 homes torched, representing over 63 percent of the total destruction. Magway Region followed as the second most affected with 18,059 homes destroyed, while Mandalay Region ranked third with 12,069 homes lost to fire.

The report states that in the three-month period from December 2025 to February 2026 alone, an additional 4,748 homes were burned down across 89 villages in six regions and states. Data for Myanmar specifically highlighted Aing Ma Village in Myingyan Township, Mandalay Region, as the hardest-hit village during this period, with over 500 homes destroyed.

It is noted that throughout 2025, the military council systematically carried out village raids, arson, and looting of civilian property under the pretext of territorial control and security for its election.

On the other hand, the report also pointed out a few instances where revolutionary forces attacked and burned villages associated with the Pyu Saw Htee (pro-military militia).
