BROUK Reports Surge in Sexual Violence Against Rohingya Women Under Arakan Army Control

May 15, 2026 | Burma Independent Voice

A report released on Thursday by the UK-based Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) states that Rohingya women and girls are facing an escalation of sexual violence, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation in areas of northern Rakhine State controlled by the Arakan Army (AA).

The report alleges that the AA has utilized gang rape, torture, and incommunicado detention as weapons of oppression during its operations to establish territorial control and conduct recruitment. BROUK documented harrowing testimonies, including that of a 22-year-old Rohingya woman who was gang-raped by seven AA members while attempting to flee to safety; her husband was reportedly killed during the incident. In another documented case, a young girl separated from her family was subjected to sexual assault by multiple AA members.

Since late 2023, over 150,000 Rohingya have been forced to flee to Bangladesh. Furthermore, 2025 marked the deadliest year on record for the community at sea, with nearly 900 Rohingya confirmed dead or missing during perilous maritime journeys.

Tun Khin, President of BROUK, emphasized that while the international community has yet to achieve accountability for the genocide committed by the Myanmar military nine years ago, the Rohingya are now facing systemic racism and atrocities from both the military and the AA.

The report calls on the UN Security Council to take urgent action against these violations, which BROUK asserts are in breach of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) provisional measures. It further demands that the council ensure humanitarian aid reaches Rohingya populations currently trapped within Rakhine State.

The report concludes that while the AA now exerts control over vast territories in Rakhine, the Rohingya remain uniquely vulnerable and unprotected, caught between the violence of the state military and ethnic armed groups.
