SCEF Welcomes President’s Return to Family; Military Junta Increases Surveillance on U Win Myint

April 22, 2026 | Burma Independent Voice

The Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF) has expressed its shared joy with the family and the entire population of Myanmar following the release of President U Win Myint on April 17, 2026, after more than five years of unjust imprisonment since the coup. This message was shared via the National Unity Government’s (NUG) official Facebook page.

In the congratulatory message, the SCEF offered prayers for the President’s safety as he continues to serve the interests of the nation and its citizens. The council also pledged to continue its utmost efforts, alongside the public, to secure the immediate release of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all remaining political prisoners.

Following his release, the military junta has reportedly implemented strict inspections and surveillance of individuals visiting President U Win Myint. Security has been significantly increased around his residence, with authorities closely monitoring all movements.

Among those who visited the President were former President U Htin Kyaw and Dr. Myo Nyunt, a member of the Central Executive Committee and spokesperson for the National League for Democracy (NLD). It was reported that the junta’s Ministry of Home Affairs summoned Dr. Myo Nyunt for questioning on April 18 and released him the following day.

The National Unity Government (NUG) reiterated its joy over the reunion of the President and several political prisoners with their families. In a statement released on April 18, the NUG vowed to continue the struggle toward the six common policy positions established by the SCEF, which include the final abolition of the 2008 Constitution, the establishment of a new Federal Democratic Union, and the achievement of justice for those who suffered injustices during the conflict period.
