May 4, 2026 | Burma Independent Voice

The Thai government has officially welcomed the transfer of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi—who has been arbitrarily detained by the military—to house arrest, describing the move as a positive development. Furthermore, Thailand expressed its support for a gradual, step-by-step re-engagement between ASEAN and Myanmar.

Thai government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek stated that the transition of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to house arrest signals progress. She added that Thailand stands ready to facilitate “appropriate step-by-step engagements” within the ASEAN framework to promote peace and national reconciliation in Myanmar.

On April 22, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow met with military leader Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyidaw. During the meeting, both sides held constructive discussions regarding bilateral relations, border security, and the reopening of the Mae Sot-Myawaddy border gates.

During those talks, the military leader reportedly informed the Thai Foreign Minister that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health and suggested that further positive arrangements could be forthcoming.

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a two-point statement regarding Myanmar’s affairs. The statement welcomed the release of prisoners, including President U Win Myint, during the Myanmar New Year and urged continued engagement with all stakeholders to achieve peace. Additionally, Thailand expressed its readiness to assist in peace efforts, including the invitation of armed groups to peace negotiations.

The spokesperson further noted that Thailand and ASEAN will continue to collaborate with Myanmar to ensure the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance.
