U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has secured “significant trade agreements” during his meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding that both nations share a mutual desire to end the conflict in Iran. The summit appears to be a dual victory for both leaders as they work to stabilize relations following last year’s trade disputes.
Before departing Beijing for Washington, Trump shared a tea walk with Xi in the historic Zhongnanhai gardens. Speaking to the press, Trump described the trip as an “incredible visit” that yielded “tremendous results.” While the specifics of the trade deals remain under wraps, Trump previously indicated that China has agreed to purchase American aircraft and agricultural products.
Beyond trade, Trump claimed that both leaders are “on the same page” regarding the Iran crisis, specifically concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz—a vital passage for 20% of the world’s oil. According to Trump, President Xi is also scheduled to visit the United States this coming September.
“Our relationship is very strong. We’ve been able to do some truly amazing work together,” Trump stated.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump revealed that during Thursday’s two-hour closed-door session, Xi pledged that China would not provide military hardware to Iran. Furthermore, agreements were reached for China to purchase Boeing jets and American soybeans.
However, Chinese state media reported that Xi issued a firm warning to Trump, stating that a failure to “properly handle” the Taiwan issue could lead to confrontation. The U.S. side has not issued an official statement regarding this warning, and both leaders ignored questions from reporters concerning Taiwan.
The high-level delegation accompanying Trump included tech titans Elon Musk and Tim Cook. Musk characterized the discussions as “exceptionally good.” During the state dinner honoring President Xi, Trump reportedly requested his favorite song, “YMCA,” and extended an official invitation for Xi and the First Lady to visit the White House on September 24.
