Thai Military Warns of Immediate Retaliation if Border Provocations Continue

May 14, 2026 | Burma Independent Voice

The Royal Thai Armed Forces have accused Cambodian troops of repeated provocations and spreading propaganda to escalate tensions along the border. The military issued a stern warning that they are prepared to respond immediately if any further firing from the Cambodian side affects Thai territory.

During a press conference on Thursday, Thai military spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree reported that more than 11 rounds of small arms fire were detected originating from the Cambodian side, directly opposite the Chong Chom border crossing in Surin Province.

According to Major General Winthai, the statements issued by the Cambodian government and high-ranking officials appear to be inconsistent with the actions of their troops on the ground. Despite a standing ceasefire agreement, gunfire and explosions continue to be heard along the border. The Thai military believes these actions are deliberate provocations intended to cause harassment and maintain a state of tension rather than to inflict mass casualties.

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense denied these allegations on May 13, labeling them as misinformation. However, Thailand points out that Cambodia appears to be prioritizing an “information war” over direct military confrontation. Reports suggest that Cambodia has been bringing foreign journalists and influencers to the border to frame Thai warning shots as unprovoked aggression.

“If any projectiles land on Thai soil, local commanders have the authority to retaliate immediately,” Major General Winthai stated firmly. He added that since these provocations have not yet endangered the lives of local residents, the public should remain calm and wary of fake news.

Relations between the two nations have remained fragile since a ceasefire was signed on December 27, 2025, following intense clashes between July and December of that year which claimed nearly 150 lives. Disputes over border canals and ancient temple territories continue to undermine diplomatic stability.
