Kim Aris, also known as Ko Htein Lin, the youngest son of detained Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, has demanded that the ruling military junta provide verified proof that his mother remains alive.

The military regime previously claimed in April that it had commuted Aung San Suu Kyi’s sentence to approximately 17 years and transferred her from prison to house arrest.

However, during an interview conducted this week in London, where Kim Aris resides, he expressed profound skepticism regarding these assertions, stating his belief that his mother, who is now over 80 years old, has not been transferred to house arrest and continues to be held inside Naypyitaw Prison. He emphasized that there is absolutely no evidence supporting the regime’s claims of her relocation to an alternative facility.

“The only news we are hearing about her health is that it is deteriorating,” Kim Aris stated, adding that information obtained from a recently released prisoner suggests the conditions of the facility where Aung San Suu Kyi is likely being incarcerated are “utterly deplorable.”

Currently, Aung San Suu Kyi is reported to be suffering from cardiac issues alongside age-related conditions, including osteoporosis.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate was apprehended during the February 2021 military coup. Kim Aris disclosed that his final direct communication with his mother was via a letter received over two years ago.

The 48-year-old Kim Aris was born and raised in London. When he was 11 years old, his mother returned to Myanmar to care for her ailing mother, a journey that ultimately led to her pivotal leadership role in the nation’s pro-democracy movement.

Aung San Suu Kyi spent nearly 15 years under house arrest between 1989 and 2010. During those protracted periods of separation, Kim Aris was raised in the United Kingdom by his late father, a prominent British academic.

Although Aung San Suu Kyi assumed governance as State Counsellor in 2016, her administration was abruptly overthrown by the military five years later. Following the coup, Kim Aris felt a profound familial and moral obligation to break his silence and advocate on her behalf.

“I am not someone who seeks the public spotlight. However, in this circumstance, it is absolutely necessary for me to step forward and speak out for my mother,” he said.

To mark his mother’s 81st birthday this past June and to amplify global awareness surrounding her arbitrary detention, Kim Aris undertook an 81-kilometer long-distance skating campaign. Furthermore, last December, he embarked on an international advocacy tour—including a visit to Japan—to campaign for her immediate liberation and to urge foreign governments to maintain rigorous diplomatic and economic pressure on the Myanmar military leadership.

As the civil war between the military junta and pro-democracy resistance forces continues to escalate across the country, Kim Aris issued an urgent appeal to the international community to sever the supply of aviation fuel to the regime in order to halt its devastating airstrikes.

“The critical imperative is to block aviation fuel from reaching the military,” he concluded.
