A comprehensive new global study reveals that the increasingly severe and protracted heatwaves driven by global warming are profoundly impacting not only human physical health but also mental well-being, leading to a surge in emergency hospitalizations. The study indicates that older adults and individuals residing in sparsely populated regions are bearing the brunt of these adverse effects.
The research was spearheaded by Yuming Guo, a professor of Environmental Health and Biostatistics at Monash University in Australia. His team conducted a meticulous analysis of over 2.6 million mental health-related hospital admission records spanning from 2000 to 2019 across 852 locations in four countries across three continents.
“While people traditionally focus on cardiovascular and respiratory issues triggered by extreme heat, the empirical evidence demonstrates that the impacts on mental health have historically been overlooked,” Professor Guo stated.
According to the research findings, mental health-related hospitalizations rose by approximately 3% on the very first day of a heatwave. Over the subsequent nine-day period following the onset of extreme heat, these admissions escalated by nearly 6%. Individuals diagnosed with clinical depression, anxiety disorders, and other psychological or behavioral conditions experienced a severe exacerbation of their symptoms due to the heat stress.
A pivotal catalyst for this heat-induced psychological toll is the disruption of sleep patterns. Elevated ambient temperatures make it remarkably difficult to achieve quality sleep, and prolonged sleep deprivation is a well-documented factor that triggers manic or depressive episodes in patients with depression and bipolar disorder. Furthermore, extreme heat stimulates the production of stress hormones within the body while simultaneously reducing patience, cognitive control, and rational decision-making capacities, ultimately pushing vulnerable individuals into acute mental health crises requiring hospitalization.
The study highlighted that older adults aged 65 and above are uniquely susceptible to the hazards of heatwaves. This vulnerability stems from the fact that the aging body struggles to regulate its core temperature effectively, a physiological challenge compounded by certain medications that further impair the body’s thermoregulatory mechanisms.
Intriguingly, the data also revealed that residents of sparsely populated rural areas suffered more severely from heatwaves than their urban counterparts. “Individuals living in less populated regions frequently encounter significant barriers to accessing mental healthcare and emergency psychiatric treatment,” Professor Guo explained. “Consequently, when their mental conditions deteriorate during a heatwave, they are left profoundly unprotected.”
Driven by climate change, global heatwaves are becoming increasingly prolonged and severe. Statistical data indicates that extreme heatwaves now contribute to more than 150,000 deaths annually worldwide.
Dr. Corné Hurter, Medical Director at the health insurance provider AXA Health, urged the public to recognize the primary symptoms of Summer Seasonal Affective Disorder (Summer SAD), a condition frequently exacerbated by the high temperatures and elevated humidity of the summer months.
While Seasonal Affective Disorder is conventionally associated with the winter season, approximately 10% of affected individuals experience its onset during the summer. The combination of intense heat, disruptions to daily routines, and chronic sleep deprivation alters brain chemistry, serving as a powerful trigger for depressive episodes.
The research underscores that prolonged exposure to extreme heat does not merely exacerbate baseline stress, anxiety, and irritability; it can precipitate profound psychiatric emergencies. Moreover, excessive temperatures systematically impair rational thinking, cognitive processing, memory retention, concentration, and overall workplace productivity.
For individuals managing conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia, prolonged heatwaves consistently aggravate their psychiatric symptoms. Compounding this risk is the side effect of various psychotropic medications, which actively interfere with the body’s natural thermoregulation system.
These research findings serve as a critical wake-up call for international public health frameworks. Hospitals and emergency departments traditionally focus exclusively on treating heat stroke and acute dehydration during extreme weather events, routinely overlooking mental health emergencies. Published in the journal Nature Health, this study explicitly demonstrates the urgent need to systematically integrate emergency mental health care and psychiatric support services into disaster preparedness strategies well ahead of future heatwaves.
