The Philippines, currently serving as the ASEAN Chair, urged the Myanmar military this Wednesday to grant the ASEAN Special Envoy access to meet with detained civilian leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. This renewed pressure for transparency follows recent reports that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been transferred to house arrest.
In a statement released by the Philippine government, the transfer of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to house arrest was described as a critical step in the trust-building process necessary for Myanmar’s long-term stability. Furthermore, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs called for her to be allowed contact with her family members, noting that such a move would demonstrate the military’s genuine commitment to national reconciliation.
The Philippines pointed out that allowing the ASEAN Special Envoy to meet with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is essential for moving forward with inclusive national-level dialogues. The statement urged stakeholders to utilize the current momentum to accelerate political discussions under the framework of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC).
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained since the 2021 military coup and was sentenced to 27 years in prison on numerous politically motivated charges. During a prisoner amnesty in recent months, her sentence was reportedly reduced by one-sixth, and President U Win Myint was also released.
