The acquisition of Pakistan’s first artificial intelligence (AI) generated film, The Next Salahuddin, by the prominent network HUM TV has sparked a heated online debate regarding the role of AI in the creative industries.
Produced by Jinn TV, the film is aimed at younger audiences and follows the story of Yusuf, a young boy in Gaza. After losing his family and home in an airstrike, Yusuf finds inspiration in the historical hero Salahuddin Ayubi. The narrative depicts his dreams of uniting the global Muslim community and raising the Palestinian flag at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
The project was envisioned by Asim Ismail and brought to life by Farhan Siddiqui using various AI tools, with support from the Malaysia-based organization Cinta Gaza Malaysia.
While the film marks a technological milestone for the Pakistani entertainment industry, it has faced significant backlash on social media. Critics are questioning the ethical implications of using AI to portray stories rooted in deep human suffering and complex geopolitical conflicts.
Further criticism has been directed at major networks for opting for AI-generated content over traditional filmmaking. Opponents argue that while these networks possess the resources to employ human actors and artists, choosing AI threatens the livelihoods of creative professionals and raises concerns regarding the environmental impact and ethical standards of AI technology.
HUM TV has yet to announce an official broadcast date. However, the emergence of The Next Salahuddin stands as a clear signal of the growing challenges and shifts facing the future of the creative arts.
