U.S. President Donald Trump is set to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday evening in a bid to salvage his global standing, which has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict in Iran. This visit marks the first time a sitting U.S. President has traveled to China in nearly a decade.
Accompanied by a delegation of tech titans, including Tesla owner Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook, Trump is reportedly aiming to secure significant trade breakthroughs. Leaving the White House, the President expressed confidence in his rapport with his counterpart, stating, “He will give me a very warm welcome,” referring to President Xi Jinping.
However, the shadow of the Middle East crisis—a conflict initiated under Trump’s watch that remains unresolved—looms large over the summit. International observers are closely watching whether the U.S. will scale back its support for Taiwan in exchange for China’s assistance in de-escalating tensions with Iran.
In characteristic style, Trump dismissed the need for external help just before his departure. “We don’t need anyone’s help with Iran. We will win, peacefully or otherwise,” he told reporters. He added that President Xi maintains a “good attitude” regarding the Iran issue, which has helped keep the situation under control.
For months, Washington has been attempting to leverage China—Iran’s primary oil customer—to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Conversely, Beijing has lodged formal protests against the U.S. for sanctioning Chinese firms accused of providing military aid to Iran.
The visit’s agenda includes a potential landmark deal for the sale of 500 Boeing aircraft and discussions on establishing a new joint board to manage bilateral trade. Additionally, establishing safety standards for AI technology is expected to be a key talking point.
Security in Beijing has been elevated to its highest level for the President’s arrival. Trump is scheduled to visit the historic Temple of Heaven with President Xi before attending a grand state dinner on Thursday.
