London-based Chelsea Football Club have appointed Spaniard Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year contract on Sunday, in a high-profile move aimed at turning around the club’s fortunes.

The Blues suffered a bitter defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday and currently languish in 9th place in the Premier League with just two matches remaining in the season.

Alonso established himself as one of Europe’s brightest managerial talents during the 2023/24 season, leading Bayer Leverkusen to an historic unbeaten domestic double in Germany. However, his subsequent tenure at Real Madrid lasted just seven months, culminating in his departure from the Bernabéu back in January.

In an official club statement, Chelsea announced: “Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as our new head coach. The Spaniard has agreed to a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge and will officially begin his duties on July 1, 2026.”

Alonso faces a monumental task in restoring Chelsea as genuine contenders for football’s biggest prizes.

Despite capturing the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League last year, the club’s silverware return is widely seen as underwhelming given the massive financial outlay. Since the American consortium BlueCo acquired the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022, Chelsea have spent over £1 billion ($1.35 billion) on player transfers. Saturday’s agonizing defeat at Wembley extended the Blues’ domestic trophy drought to eight long seasons.

BlueCo’s ownership has faced persistent fan protests over its aggressive policy of stockpiling young prospects from across the globe. While this strategy yielded a breakout superstar in England international Cole Palmer, critics argue that a glaring lack of experience in both the squad and the dugout has led to chronic inconsistency on the pitch.

Alonso becomes Chelsea’s sixth permanent managerial appointment in just four years, following Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, and Liam Rosenior. The 44-year-old tactician will look to rebuild his managerial reputation at Stamford Bridge after his brief, turbulent stint in Madrid.

Securing Alonso’s signature represents a significant coup for Chelsea’s embattled owners. A large section of the Liverpool fanbase had been intensely clamoring for Alonso—who enjoyed a glittering five-year playing career at Anfield from 2004 to 2009—to return to Merseyside as a replacement for the under-pressure Arne Slot.
