ASEAN Remains Divided Over Recognition of Myanmar’s Military-Led Election Results

ASEAN member states have yet to reach a consensus regarding the recognition of the election results held in Myanmar. This deadlock emerges as former coup leader Min Aung Hlaing solidified his grip on power by assuming the presidency this past April.
Despite ongoing political instability, the military-led administration conducted a multi-phased election starting on December 28 of last year, followed by subsequent rounds on January 11 and January 25, 2026. The military-backed party predictably secured victory in these polls.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, ASEAN spokesperson Dominic Xavier M. Imperial stated that the bloc’s stance remains unchanged, continuing to operate based on the Five-Point Consensus (5PC).
He noted that while the current chair, the Philippines, and other member states maintain individual engagements with Myanmar, ASEAN is closely monitoring progress—or lack thereof—regarding the 5PC. These points include the immediate cessation of violence, holding inclusive dialogues with all stakeholders, the provision of humanitarian assistance, and the mediation efforts of the ASEAN Special Envoy.
