Political prisoners receiving medical treatment at Insein Prison Hospital were physically assaulted and verbally abused by a responsible police official, sources close to the victims told BIV.
On March 12, during an inspection of the Guard Ward at Insein Prison Hospital, the Insein Township Police Commander physically assaulted two prisoners undergoing medical treatment.
According to reports, the Township Police Commander entered the Guard Ward and, after picking a quarrel over the answers provided to his questions, proceeded to punch the prisoners multiple times without provocation. Furthermore, the victims sustained injuries after being kicked and struck on the temples.
The Township Police Commander not only shouted profanities at the prisoners but also threatened them, saying, “I can kill you, and nothing will happen.”
The officer also ordered the seizure of the prisoners’ medicine, clothing, and food supplies, an act which constitutes a further violation of human rights.
Perpetrators of such human rights violations, including the unprovoked physical assault of political prisoners within prisons, currently enjoy impunity without being held effectively accountable under the military coup regime.
According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), there are at least 14,402 confirmed political prisoners in various prisons across Myanmar, with an additional 7,893 cases still pending confirmation.
