Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters following the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow’s Red Square that he believes the ongoing war with Ukraine is drawing to a close.

“I think this matter is coming to an end,” Putin stated, referring to the “special military operation” in Ukraine. However, he simultaneously maintained a sharp tone, criticizing Western nations for their continued support of the Kyiv government.

This year’s annual military parade differed significantly from previous years, notably lacking the usual display of tanks and missiles. The scale was reduced due to security concerns regarding potential Ukrainian drone strikes. Nevertheless, the event proceeded without incident, following a last-minute ceasefire agreement mediated by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In his speech, Putin alleged that Russia is fighting a “just war” and accused Ukraine of attempting to invade with NATO’s assistance. “The West continues to fuel the confrontation with Russia after breaking their promises of aid. But now, this is nearing its conclusion,” he said.

Regarding a potential meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Putin insisted that such an encounter would only occur after a long-term, sustainable peace treaty is reached. “Meeting in a third country is possible, but it must be the final stage of the peace process,” he added.

Additionally, Putin pointed out that while an agreement had been reached to exchange 1,000 prisoners from each side, the Ukrainian side has yet to provide a formal response.

This year’s parade marked the first time in 20 years that the event was held without heavy military hardware. Access for international journalists was also significantly restricted.
