President U Win Myint, who had been unjustly detained and imprisoned since the military coup, was released today, April 17, according to reports from military propaganda media. His release is part of an amnesty granted by coup leader Min Aung Hlaing, which included the discharge of 4,355 prisoners.
During the initial hours of the coup, the military attempted to force President U Win Myint to sign a letter of resignation. However, he resolutely refused to abandon the presidential mandate entrusted to him by the people, choosing instead to face imprisonment.
Photos circulating online indicate that President U Win Myint has returned to his residence and has been reunited with his family.
