Rohingya Boat Sinking is a Direct Result of Global Failure, says ARNC

The Arakan Rohingya National Council (ARNC) expressed its profound grief and outrage over the sinking of a refugee boat in the Andaman Sea carrying approximately 250–280 people, stating that the tragedy is a direct result of the failure of the international community.
“This tragedy has devastated Rohingya communities already enduring years of persecution and displacement,” the statement noted. It further emphasized that these perilous journeys are undertaken not out of choice, but out of desperation and the known risk of death.
The ARNC’s press release stated that the continued failure of the international community to exert pressure on Myanmar’s military leadership, including Min Aung Hlaing, has allowed crimes against the Rohingya to continue with impunity.
The boat, which departed from Teknaf in Bangladesh bound for Malaysia, capsized due to overcrowded conditions after days at sea. The majority of those on board, including genocide survivors, women, and children, are now feared missing.
Furthermore, the ARNC claimed that according to credible sources, Thamee Hla village in Rathedaung Township—an area under the supervision of the Arakan Army—has become a hub for human trafficking. The council demanded that this trafficking network be dismantled by any means necessary.
The ARNC called on the international community, including the United Nations and ASEAN, to take immediate action to:
- Dismantle and prosecute human trafficking networks;
- Restore and increase humanitarian funding for Rohingya refugees;
- Ensure accountability for perpetrators of crimes against the Rohingya;
- Exert sustained pressure to create conditions for safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation with full citizenship rights and guarantees of protection.
The Arakan Rohingya National Council concluded by reaffirming its commitment to advocating for justice, protection, and the full restoration of the rights of the Rohingya people.
