Australia secured a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Turkey in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D fixture today, vindicating a courageous and high-stakes tactical gamble by Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic.
In the clash staged at Vancouver’s BC Place, goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, combined with a stunning masterclass from unheralded young goalkeeper Patrick Beach, propelled Australia to a historic World Cup triumph.
