“Geminis are two-faced, Cancers are overly emotional, and no one is as stubborn and lazy as a Taurus.” These kinds of judging people’s mindsets and personalities based on zodiac signs are a frequently heard topic in conversations among young people. Right after the question “Which month were you born in?”, judgments based on zodiac signs tend to follow. While some do not accept these beliefs, on the flip side, it is true that the role of zodiac signs is gradually becoming important among youth, ranging from initiating friendships to choosing life partners.
When we talk about belief in zodiac signs, it spans broadly, from casual, fun participation in everyday conversations to influencing major decisions based on deep spiritual guidance in daily life.
Then, why is all of this happening? According to Oxford Brookes University, among the many reasons Gen Z is obsessed with zodiac signs, a main reason is that astrology helps them with self-reflection. In other words, most Gen Z use zodiac signs casually to analyze themselves and better understand their own traits rather than for predicting the future.
A second reason is that humans, whether consciously or unconsciously, have a “desire to belong.” The fact that humans are biologically social animals that live in groups is a 100% true and undeniable scientific fact. Therefore, conversations about zodiac signs bring people closer together. Because of this, it is plain to see that zodiac-related content has become trendy on social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, creating digital communities where people can engage with one another.
Another unexpected aspect is its impact on the workplace. According to a 2024 survey by EduBirdie, 63% of Gen Z believe that zodiac signs have a positive impact on their work. For Gen Z, who are entering today’s unpredictable, fast-paced, and unstable job market, they are accepting spiritual beliefs alongside traditional religious beliefs. Thus, it is no surprise that zodiac signs are gradually becoming a “cosmic compass” guiding their minds and spirits in the workplace.
What is surprising is that seeing products based on this zodiac trend appearing quite frequently in the market. Examples include zodiac-themed jewelry, perfumes, accessories, keychains, gemstones, handbags, cosmetics, scented candles, hair and makeup styles, clothing styles, menu items at restaurants, and even daily, monthly, or yearly horoscope services. These markets serve as proof of the strong fan base for zodiac signs.
On the other hand, opposing views on astrology beliefs can also be found. Criticisms persist that it is unscientific for people to blame mistakes or social friction on “bad planetary alignments” or say “I reacted that way because of my zodiac sign”, that it reduces the motivation to take personal responsibility and improve one’s behavior, and that placing people into zodiac stereotypes narrows people’s perspectives.
Therefore, in any matter, it is extremely important not to become overly obsessed or go to extremes. In conclusion, zodiac concepts remain an interesting and useful trend among Gen Z for self-reflection, seeking emotional comfort, and starting lighthearted conversations.
Whether you go through every day of your life dictated by planetary alignments, stars, and zodiac signs, or drive your life forward with your own critical thinking ability, depends 100% on you.
