Scientists Warn of Hazardous Chemicals Found in Commercial Pet Food

April 4, 2026 | Burma Independent Voice

A research team led by Kei Nomiyama from Ehime University in Japan has detected alarming levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in 100 varieties of pet food sold in Japan. PFAS are a group of synthetic chemicals known as “forever chemicals” because they do not easily break down and tend to accumulate in the body over long periods.

The findings suggest that pets are consistently exposed to these toxins through their daily diets. The study highlighted that cat food, in particular, contained higher concentrations of these toxic substances compared to other pet products.

According to the research, pet foods containing fish, seafood, or fish by-products showed the highest levels of PFAS. Scientists believe this is likely due to “bioaccumulation,” where toxins build up through the aquatic food chain before being processed into pet food.

One specific brand of dry cat food manufactured in China showed the highest concentration at 16 ppb (parts per billion). Meanwhile, products manufactured in Thailand and Japan exhibited distinct chemical “fingerprints” based on their respective geographic origins.

Once ingested, PFAS persist in the bloodstream and internal organs. Previous studies have indicated that the presence of these chemicals in feline blood may be linked to thyroid dysfunction and liver disease.

“Pets are highly vulnerable to hazardous chemicals within the domestic environment,” Nomiyama stated. “Finding these substances in our pets serves as a warning bell for human health as well.”

While Japan and many other nations have existing pet food safety regulations, specific legal limits for PFAS have not yet been established. Researchers are now urging pet owners to pay closer attention to ingredient lists rather than relying solely on brand marketing when purchasing pet food.
