Concerns and reactions are mounting among the music community and social media users following an abrupt ban on live band performances at restaurants in Yangon, effective starting tonight.
Reports indicate that ward administrators and police officers across various townships in Yangon personally visited local establishments this evening to enforce the restriction. Business owners were instructed to cease all live performances immediately, with only recorded background music being permitted.
New Regulations and Licensing Issues According to leaked information regarding entertainment licenses, the following restrictions are expected to be implemented:
- Existing Establishments: Restaurants with pre-existing live band licenses must re-apply for new permits and will only be allowed to continue operations if they meet newly specified criteria.
- New Establishments: It is reported that new businesses will be strictly prohibited from hosting live band entertainment under any circumstances.
Impact on Musicians and Business Owners The sudden ban, issued without prior notice, has dealt a severe blow to singers and musicians who rely on nightly performances as their primary source of income. Many have expressed deep distress over the immediate loss of their livelihoods.
Restaurant owners are also voicing their anxieties, fearing a significant drop in patronage without live entertainment, which could jeopardize their business operations.
“For us, this is a hand-to-mouth job. With such a sudden shutdown, we are at a complete loss as to what to do next,” a member of a Yangon-based live band told BIV.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the authorities clarifying whether this ban is a temporary measure or a long-term policy. Musicians and business owners alike continue to monitor the situation with grave concern.
