NUG Reaffirms Recognition of Elected Leaders; Vows to Uphold Six Revolutionary Objectives Until the End

April 18, 2026 | Burma Independent Voice

The National Unity Government (NUG) issued a statement today, April 18, asserting that the reunion of President U Win Myint and other political prisoners with their families is a component of the people’s revolutionary victory. The NUG further reaffirmed its continued recognition of President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as the people’s elected leaders.

The NUG stated that it firmly upholds the results of the 2020 election and continues to recognize U Win Myint and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as the legitimate President and State Counsellor of the State, respectively.

“The ultimate goal of the Spring Revolution is not only the unconditional release of all those unjustly detained, including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, but also the final escape from the vicious cycle of oppression where successive generations of military dictators have bullied the country and its people for their own self-interest,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the NUG confirmed it will steadfastly adhere to the Six Common Policy Positions, which serve as the objectives of the Spring Revolution. These six positions include:

  1. Eradicating the military coup and ending the military’s involvement in politics;
  2. Placing all armed forces under the control of a civilian government;
  3. Abolishing the 2008 Constitution in its entirety;
  4. Drafting a new constitution based on federalism and democratic systems;
  5. Establishing a new Federal Democratic Union;
  6. Implementing transitional justice for those who have suffered injustices.

In its statement, the NUG also emphasized its revolutionary vision: that the establishment of a Federal Democratic Union can only be considered successful when justice is achieved for the war crimes committed by the military junta against the people. The government pledged to continue the struggle until these goals are met.

The National Unity Government concluded by reaffirming its commitment to seeing the Spring Revolution through to its destination, aiming for a total transformation of both the era and the system.
