YANGON — The Acting President of the National Unity Government (NUG), Duwa Lashi La, declared that relying solely on non-violent resistance is no longer sufficient to dismantle the ruling military dictatorship, asserting that the total eradication of the military regime necessitates a calculated combination of both conventional political diplomacy and armed resistance. This definitive policy address was delivered on June 19, 2026, during an official virtual ceremony commemorating the 81st birthday of the detained State Counsellor, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Acting President Duwa Lashi La emphasized in his address that navigating the Spring Revolution through political, populist, and armed revolutionary tracks is an absolute historical necessity, noting that the current military leadership is substantially more malicious and deceitful than previous military regimes, which compels the entire populace to synthesize both soft and hard resistance strategies to ensure the absolute destruction of the dictatorship.
This occasion marks the fifth consecutive year that the State Counsellor’s birthday has been observed in her enforced absence, a period that the Acting President described as an exceedingly grueling era for the imprisoned leader, as well as the most brutal and challenging chapter for the country and its citizens. He lauded Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for structurally cultivating foundational political tenets within Myanmar society, including freedom, justice, accountability, and the concept of “freedom from fear,” while consistently championing the core democratic doctrine that sovereign power must emanate strictly from the people. Furthermore, Duwa Lashi La characterized the coup leader Min Aung Hlaing’s arbitrary detention and imprisonment of the State Counsellor as tantamount to a treasonous coup d’état against the state, effectively trampling the democratic will of the nation under military boots.
The Acting President reiterated that the adoption of armed struggle during the current Spring Revolution was a mandated response to unprecedented state terror, clarifying that because the current military clique operates with a degree of cruelty that surpasses historical precedents, the amalgam of armed and civilian-led resistance remains the only viable path forward. He further deduced that the military authorities’ persistent incarceration of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi stems fundamentally from their institutional terror of popular unity, recognizing her unique capacity to mobilize and consolidate collective civilian power. In conclusion, the Acting President reaffirmed the NUG’s comprehensive commitment to securing the unconditional liberation of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi alongside all political prisoners, while systematically restoring sovereign power to the citizenry, expressing a profound aspiration that the coming year will witness her warm reunion with the public rather than another birthday spent in isolation.
